PlanNYC, a student-run website based at NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, has proudly served New Yorkers for five years. During that time, the growth of online information on land use and development issues, along with advances in technology such as RSS feeds and news alerts, have created many opportunities for New Yorkers to stay informed about housing and land use debates in the City. As a result, the daily news updating on this site has become less unique and less critical to our users.

We are pleased to keep the existing PlanNYC content online as a resource; all content on the site is current of July 6, 2010, but will not be updated after that date.

Critics Upset With City Over Park Space Around New Yankee Stadium

NYC Park Advocates contend that the city promised to return 25 acres of parkland that was destroyed in the process of building the new Yankee Stadium, but is actually only returning 22 acres. The city, however, claims that it is building back 32 acres. On Monday June 28th, the city will announce the completion of River Avenue Skate Park.

The old Yankee Stadium demolition is underway, a process park advocates say has taken far too long. Residents were promised replacement ball fields as part of the approval process for the new Yankee Stadium, which was constructed on former parkland. Once the old stadium is removed, the replacement ball fields can be built.

New Parks Near Yankee Stadium are Delayed

22 acres of new parks that were planned to replace old open space taken during the new Yankee Stadium construction are being delayed. Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte stated that the parks are expected for completion near the end of 2010. Originally, the new parks were expected to be open by summer 2009.

A group of Yankee fans have organized in an attempt to save Gate 2 of the old Yankee Stadium from demolition. The group has presented designs that would preserve Gate 2 and use it as the entrance to Heritage field, which will be a park built on the site of the old stadium.

Many fans are disgruntled by the lack of access to players at the new Yankees Stadium. Whereas players entering and exiting the old stadium had to walk from their parking lot to the stadium, players can now drive directly into and out of the stadium.

The City announced the opening of the new Yankees – E. 153rd Street Station in the South Bronx, the first new railroad station in the Bronx for years. The $91 million station is fully accessible to the disabled and able to handle 10,000 baseball fans in addition to being a key commuter hub along the Metro-North railroad.

A report released by NYC Park Advocates attacks the City for the little progress on building playing fields in the South Bronx to replace those lost when the new Yankee Stadium construction began nearly three years ago. The City responded that they are replacing parkland as quickly as they can.

The Yankees will pay the city $11.5 million for the right to sell city-owned memorabilia from the old Yankee stadium. The money will go into the city’s general fund. The city reached a similar deal with the Mets, and received $3.5 million from the sale of Shea Stadium memorabilia.
