On Friday, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (D) approved the $2 billion Domino Sugar redevelopment plan but called for some slight modifications to the project. Markowitz requested that the developer cut back the number of parking spaces available on site, and ensure that affordable housing units are permanently protected. Markowitz also noted the need for a supermarket at the site, and called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to prepare for increased transportation needs in the area. Local reaction to the project remains mixed, with many fearing an investment of public funds in an overly ambitious private development project.
