City Council Presents Challenging Questions for Coney Island Development
BROOKLYN COMMUNITY DISTRICT 13
A few City Council members requested a delay in voting for the City’s Coney Island development plan after concerns arose during a Zoning Subcommittee public hearing on the project. Much of the concerns involved whether the City would likely use eminent domain to take over privately owned lands that are necessary for the City’s development plan. Another issue concerned how the parkland mapping and de-mapping of the amusement area and existing parkland would affect the preservation of the Coney Island amusement park and creation of affordable housing. As questions arose, Zoning Subcommittee Chair Tony Avella recommended suspending the Uniform Land Use and Review Procedure (ULURP) for the project (the project is currently in the City Council stage of ULURP) while proponents, such as the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Seth Pinsky, advocated that solutions would be found and that timely approval was necessary. The City Council is required to vote on the plan by July 29th as required by ULURP.
