Proposed Zoning Plan Includes Bowery Corridor

The Bowery Alliance Network (BAN) unveiled its zoning plan for the east side of the Bowery. The plan, which stretches from Canal to E. 9th Streets, will eventually be brought before local Community Board 3 and the City Planning Commission. The plan mimics surrounding zoning districts that do not currently encompass the eastern corridor of the Bowery by calling for an 85-feet height limit and preserving commercial uses from residential conversion. The corridor was left out of last year’s East village/ Lower East Side rezoning. Two buildings along this corridor, at 97 and 357 Bowery, were recently calendared by the Landmarks Preservation Commission for hearings on their potential historic designation. Supporters of the plan hope the plan, if adopted, would prevent the influx of luxury high-rise residential development and preserve the low-rise character of the neighborhood.
