Mayor Bloomberg released plans for a 5,000-unit affordable housing complex to be built in Hunters Point South in Long Island City with 3000 of the units going to families with incomes between $55,000 and $158,000. The complex will be built on 30 acres of land purchased for $100 million from the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The new development, which went through the city’s lane use review process, the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) in 2008, will also include a new high school, retail space, a community center and a waterfront park. Infrastructure improvements needed for the project are expected to cost about $175 million.
