PlanNYC, a student-run website based at NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, has proudly served New Yorkers for five years. During that time, the growth of online information on land use and development issues, along with advances in technology such as RSS feeds and news alerts, have created many opportunities for New Yorkers to stay informed about housing and land use debates in the City. As a result, the daily news updating on this site has become less unique and less critical to our users.

We are pleased to keep the existing PlanNYC content online as a resource; all content on the site is current of July 6, 2010, but will not be updated after that date.

We hope you continue to use the data and research available at the Furman Center (which you can find at www.furmancenter.org), and we welcome your ideas and suggestions for how we can continue to provide objective information and analysis about land use and housing policy debates in New York City.

Political Discord Over Domino

While Councilman Steve Levin (D-33) and Assemblyman Vito Lopez (D-53) oppose the New Domino project, Councilwoman Diana Reyna (D-34) and Representative Nydia Valasquez (D-12) support it. The tension surfaced at a City Hall rally on Monday, June 21st where both sides outlined their viewpoints. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is attempting to mediate the disagreement.

Parking Decrease At Domino

New Domino developers will reduce their proposed parking spaces by 266. The project was originally slated to receive 1,694 parking spaces. The reduction was requested by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. While it is uncertain how to achieve the ideal number of parking spaces, community stakeholders believe that this reduction is not nearly as significant as it needs to be.

New Domino Gets Planning Commission Approval

On Monday June 7th, the City Planning Commission approved the New Domino proposal by a 13-0 vote. The plan will now be sent to the City Council. Councilman Steve Levin (D-33) opposes the project, arguing that it is too dense for the neighborhood's current infrastructure.

The final environmental impact statement released by the City Planning Commission on Friday June, 4th suggests that the commission will likely approve the Domino proposal. Critics argue that the city's report does not adequately consider calls for density reduction as requested by Community Board 1. Uncertainty Over Brooklyn Navy Yard Preservation

Significant decay at Admiral's Row has led to concerns that preservation may not be feasible. An agreement between the federal government and New York City requires at least one of the homes and a timber shed on the site be restored but this may not be feasible. Park preservationists are now looking at ways to rehabilitate these structures and incorporate them into the Navy Yard.

Redevelopment of Fulton Ferry Park, in Downtown Brooklyn, has stalled as the city and state debate which entity has ownership over the area. The state maintains that the Brooklyn Bridge Development Corporation does not have ownership over Empire Fulton Ferry Park, and has just secured a long-term lease.

A secret 2006 city report revealed that Domino Sugar developers could make over a $400 million profit. While the Department of Housing Preservation and Development contend that the report is hypothetical and based on pre-housing crisis forecasts, representatives for the developer strongly criticized the report and called it misleading.

A 2006 report by the City found that redevelopment of the Domino Sugar factory could result in millions of dollars of profit for the developers. The Community Preservation Corporation Resources, which is helping to manage the project, responded to the report by saying that construction costs, stales prices, fixed costs, and land and development costs used in the report were erroneous.
