$134,000 Slated for Study of Canal

The United States Army Corp of Engineers is expected to receive $134,000 from the House of Representatives for the ongoing Gowanus Canal and Bay Ecosystems Restoration Feasibility Study. The results of the study will aid cleanup efforts for the 1.5-mile canal.

As a result of more than 800 public responses, the Environmental Protection Agency was unable to make a decision on whether the Gowanus Canal will be designated as a Superfund. The decision was expected to be made by September 16th. Clean up for the canal is currently estimated to be about $400 million. The Superfund distinction would require polluters to pay for clean up costs.

The city chose Hudson Companies to develop 774 apartments and a park on Public Place, a six-acre contaminated site along the Gowanus Canal. Of the 774 apartments, 541 would be below market-rate, and the canal side of the public park would join a waterfront esplanade. If clothing magnate Henry Abadi, who owns land directly south of the site joins in, the project could grow by 500 apartments.

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) announced that the Hudson Companies has won the bid to develop the Public Place site along the Gowanus Canal. The winning bid includes 774 housing units, of which 615 will be below market rate. Bluestone Organization, the 5th Avenue Committee, and the Jonathan Rose Companies are also part of the team that won the bid.
