PlanNYC, a student-run website based at NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, has proudly served New Yorkers for five years. During that time, the growth of online information on land use and development issues, along with advances in technology such as RSS feeds and news alerts, have created many opportunities for New Yorkers to stay informed about housing and land use debates in the City. As a result, the daily news updating on this site has become less unique and less critical to our users.
We are pleased to keep the existing PlanNYC content online as a resource; all content on the site is current of July 6, 2010, but will not be updated after that date.
We hope you continue to use the data and research available at the Furman Center (which you can find at www.furmancenter.org), and we welcome your ideas and suggestions for how we can continue to provide objective information and analysis about land use and housing policy debates in New York City.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has issued eviction notices for the residents of Upper East Side buildings in the path of the slated Second Avenue subway construction. The MTA is having difficulty locating equivalent housing alternatives, and many residents complain that the current relocation proposals are insufficient.

A survey found that 91% of 59 businesses located near the construction site of the 2nd Avenue Subway have suffered from reduced sales since the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) began work on the project. More than 30% reported that they may have to close before the line is expected to open in 2017. Nearly half report laying off workers to survive.

Many real estate companies are concerned that extended construction time of the 2nd Ave. subway will lead to depressed property sales and rental prices near construction zones. Their qualms have grown after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) released estimates that the project might not be completed until 2017 (the original estimate was by 2015).

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer (D) wrote a letter to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) deriding the 2nd Avenue subway delays as "an insult neighborhood residents, commuters, and taxpayers." Though Stringer reportedly requested MTA's Inspector General to determine the cause of delays, the MTA denies receiving such a request.

An analysis of the various challenges facing the 2nd Avenue Subway construction concluded that the completion date for phase one of the project should be extended to December 2016, and possibly until the summer of 2017. The targeted completion date for phase one was previously intended to be June of 2015.

The company appointed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to evaluate concrete on the Second Avenue Subway project is under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The business, American Standard Testing Laboratories, is suspected of falsifying reports and other irregularities.

Some displaced tenants of a building on 92nd and 2nd that was recently evacuated blame their plight on vibrations from nearby subway construction and the Buildings Department’s failure to enforce past violations. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Buildings Department claim that the construction is unrelated.
Leaning Building on 2nd Ave Subway Line Evacuated
2ND AVENUE SUBWAYA building at Second Avenue and 92nd Street was evacuated, apparently because it was leaning 18 inches. The building is nearby construction on the Second Avenue subway line, but Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials say that this building’s lean was well documented before construction began.
